Safari Snorkel SS15HFB - Nissan Patrol Y61 GU 2.8 & 4.2 TD
The Safari SS15HFB snorkel raises the air intake on a Nissan Patrol Y61 GU above the bonnet line and strips water out of the airstream through a 3.5 inch Air Ram head.
Fits Series 1-3, wagon and utility bodies, with RD28-TE 2.8 and TD42-T / TD42-Ti 4.2 diesel engines. Australian made, lifetime manufacturer warranty.
Safari Snorkel SS15HFB - Nissan Patrol Y61 GU 2.8 and 4.2 diesel
People buy a Y61 Patrol precisely to go where water and dust are. The catch is that the factory air intake sits low, behind the front guard - and a diesel engine does not forgive ingesting even a small amount of water.
SS15HFB is a V-Spec line snorkel, designed and manufactured in Australia around the intake layout of the diesel GU Patrol. It raises the intake point above the bonnet line and strips water out of the airstream on the way.

Key features
- 3.5 inch Air Ram head with water separator - rain and spray are thrown clear instead of soaking into the filter, so the element runs dry for longer.
- Raised intake point - air is drawn from far higher than standard, above the densest dust and out of reach of the bow wave when crossing water.
- Cross-linked, UV-stabilised polyethylene body with substantial wall thickness - built for impacts and years of sun exposure.
- Made in Australia - the tooling and material are Safari's own design, not a copy.
- Lifetime manufacturer warranty on V-Spec snorkels.
- Complete hardware in the kit - clamps and duct joiner included, so you are not hunting for small parts on installation day.
Fitment
Nissan Patrol Y61 (GU), Series 1, 2 and 3 - both wagon and utility (pick-up / cab chassis) bodies. Confirmed diesel engines: RD28-TE 2.8 and TD42-T and TD42-Ti 4.2.
Excluded versions: Patrols with the ZD30DDT 3.0 diesel and the TB45E and TB48E petrol variants use different Safari part numbers - this snorkel does not fit them. If you are unsure which series and engine your Patrol has, get in touch.

Installation and notes
Installation is permanent - it requires cutting an opening in the front guard and routing the duct to the airbox. The manufacturer supplies fitting instructions. We rate the difficulty as moderate: the work itself is not complex, but the cut edges must be properly treated against corrosion, otherwise you will find rust in that guard within two years.
We can fit this snorkel in the Szekla4x4 workshop, sealing the edges and checking the whole intake system for leaks once it is back together.
Frequently asked questions
Will the Patrol cross deeper water with a snorkel?
A snorkel on its own does not raise the rated wading depth. It protects the air intake, but you are still limited by axle and gearbox breathers, wiring, seals and the radiator. It removes the most expensive risk, not all of them.
Does the guard have to be cut?
Yes. Fitting involves cutting an opening in the front guard and drilling the mounting points according to the manufacturer's instructions.
My Patrol has the 3.0 ZD30 - does it fit?
No. SS15HFB covers the RD28-TE 2.8 and the TD42-T and TD42-Ti 4.2. Safari uses a separate part number for the ZD30DDT - contact us and we will quote the correct one.
Can I add a cyclonic pre-cleaner?
Safari offers pre-cleaners that mount on the Air Ram head. Before you order we will confirm compatibility with this kit and advise whether it makes sense for your conditions.
Does the snorkel change intake behaviour?
It changes where the air is drawn from, not how much the engine needs. The Air Ram design is engineered not to restrict flow.
What is the warranty?
The manufacturer covers V-Spec snorkels, SS15HFB included, with a lifetime warranty.
Why it is worth it
- A Y61 Patrol gets used seriously - and water ingestion is the cheapest failure to avoid entirely.
- Lifetime warranty and Australian manufacture instead of cheap mouldings of unknown durability.
- Noticeably longer air filter life on gravel and sand.
If your Patrol still has years of work ahead of it, this is one of those modifications that pays for itself on the first wet crossing.
