Safari V-Spec SS188HF raises the air intake of the Prado 150 to roof height and protects the 1KD-FTV engine from ingesting water and dust.

The head separates water out of the incoming stream, and the thick-walled, cross-linked, UV-stabilised polyethylene handles branches and sun exposure. Intended for the 3.0 D-4D version built 10/2009-01/2015. An accurate template is included; we can fit it in our workshop.

Safari V-Spec Snorkel SS188HF — Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 150, 10/2009–01/2015, 3.0 D-4D

The Prado 150 goes where water and dust turn up on the same trip: washed-out crossings in the morning, gravel in the afternoon. The factory intake sits low in the engine bay and draws in both — and the 1KD-FTV engine does not forgive ingested water.

The Safari V-Spec snorkel raises the intake point to roof height alongside the A-pillar and feeds air from outside the spray and dust zone.

3.0 D-4D (1KD-FTV)

Key features

  • Water-separating head — it drops rain and spray out of the incoming stream instead of delivering it to the filter element.
  • Cross-linked, UV-stabilised polyethylene — a material chosen for long sun exposure and the occasional knock off-road.
  • Increased wall thickness — a snorkel is not decoration and has to survive contact with branches on forest tracks.
  • Fitting guide with an accurate template — the cut line is marked out, not estimated by eye.
  • Designed and manufactured in Australia — tooled for the Prado 150 body.

Fitment

Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 150 with the 3.0 D-4D (1KD-FTV) engine, built from 10/2009 to 01/2015. The snorkel mounts to the front guard and runs up alongside the A-pillar.

The 4.0 petrol version has its own part number, SS189HF, and later Prado models with the 2.8 D-4D engine use further part numbers. If you are not certain about the version and year, send us the VIN.

Fitting and notes

Fitting is permanent — it requires cutting an opening in the front guard and drilling in the inner guard. The manufacturer includes a fitting guide with an accurate template used to mark the cut; that template decides whether the snorkel sits parallel to the glass line.

Difficulty is moderate to high. Three things matter: a square cut, anti-corrosion treatment of the edges, and a sealed connection to the airbox. If the last one leaks, the engine draws air beside the snorkel and the whole installation loses its point.

We can also fit it for you — Szekla4x4.pl is an online shop, a bricks-and-mortar store and a workshop focused on off-road and overlanding, so you can leave the vehicle with us and collect it with the intake already fitted and sealed.

Frequently asked questions

Will the snorkel let the vehicle wade deeper?

No. A snorkel moves the intake point up to roof height and protects the engine from ingesting water, but the wading depth declared by the vehicle manufacturer does not change. You are still limited by axle and gearbox breathers, door and floor seals, wiring, control modules in the sills, and bearings and joints that water reaches regardless of the intake. A snorkel removes one risk — the most expensive one, hydraulic lock — not all of them.

Does the guard have to be cut?

Yes. The snorkel passes through the front guard, so an opening has to be cut. The kit contains an accurate template that marks the outline, and the cut edges are then treated against corrosion. Returning the guard to factory condition after removal is not possible.

Does it fit my year and engine?

This part number is intended for the Prado 150 with the 3.0 D-4D engine, 10/2009 – 01/2015. For the 4.0 petrol version the correct number is SS189HF, and later Prado models with the 2.8 engine use different numbers. Send us the VIN and we will check before you order.

Can a cyclonic pre-filter be added?

Yes. The V-Spec head separates water droplets out of the incoming air on its own, and for dusty work it can be swapped for a cyclonic pre-cleaner. That is the standard answer to convoy driving on gravel: dust ends up in the collector bowl instead of in the air filter element, which then lasts considerably longer. Message us and we will match a cyclone to the head diameter.

Does the snorkel change intake behaviour or engine output?

The V-Spec line (the HF suffix in the part number) is a protective snorkel — its job is to raise and shield the intake and separate water out of the air stream, not to increase flow. Increased flow is what Safari's separate ARMAX line with the HP suffix is for. If you want a snorkel that primarily protects the engine and needs no tuning changes, V-Spec is the right choice.

Why it is worth it

  • You protect the 1KD-FTV engine against the one failure that cannot be repaired in the field, and whose cost is many times the price of the snorkel.
  • Cleaner air means a longer service life for the filter element and less dust reaching the turbo.
  • Body-specific tooling and an accurate template — the snorkel looks and sits like a factory part.

If you want certainty about the version, send us the VIN — we will match the part number and offer a fitting date.
