The ZD30 dislikes two things - dust and water - and the standard intake on a Y61 Patrol collects both straight off the wheel arch. The Safari V-Spec SS16HFB snorkel moves the intake up the left-hand A-pillar, and its air ram head throws water out before it reaches the filter. The kit is specific to the 3.0 ZD30-DDTi turbo diesel and includes the guard panel template. Industrial-specification materials, Safari lifetime warranty.

Safari V-Spec Snorkel SS16HFB - Nissan Patrol Y61 (GU) 3.0 ZD30-DDTi

A Y61 Patrol spends its life where it is muddy and dusty, yet its standard air inlet sits inside the engine bay only a few dozen centimetres above the road. At a water crossing that leaves very little safety margin, and on gravel it means a filter that chokes after a single day in convoy.

SS16HFB comes from the V-Spec line: an industrial-specification polyethylene body, an air ram head that works as a water separator, and a direct connection to the standard air cleaner housing. Air is taken at roof height, where it is cooler and far cleaner.

Key features

  • UV-stabilised cross-linked polyethylene body with substantial wall thickness - it takes branch strikes and years of sun without going brittle.
  • The air ram head separates water from the air stream, so rain and spray never reach the filter element.
  • Intake at roof height, out of the dust cloud trailing the vehicle ahead of you.
  • V-Spec line with industrial-grade materials and a lifetime manufacturer warranty.
  • Works with the factory air cleaner housing - you keep the original element and the original service routine.
  • Guard panel template and complete hardware in the kit, so the cut lands exactly where it should.

Fitment

Nissan Patrol Y61 (GU) with the 3.0 four-cylinder ZD30-DDTi turbo diesel. The Safari installation guide covers GU Series 1, 2 and 3; the Australian distributor lists this number for 05/2000-10/2017, wagon and cab chassis alike. The snorkel mounts on the left-hand side of the body. This part number is tied to the 3.0 ZD30-DDTi - Safari uses different numbers for the other Y61 engines, so contact us first if yours is a 2.8 or a petrol.

Fitting and notes

Fitting calls for a 111 mm hole saw opening in the left guard panel, five 16 mm holes in the guard and three 8 mm holes in the A-pillar, plus removing the flange and rib from the air cleaner base inlet - the Safari guide specifies a body saw for that step. The guard panel template is supplied. It is worth sealing the cut edges while you are there; in our workshop that is standard practice on every snorkel we fit.

Frequently asked questions

Does the snorkel let me wade deeper?

No. A snorkel protects the air intake only. Real wading depth also depends on axle, gearbox and transfer case breathers, seals, the alternator and the wiring. It is an important part of preparing a vehicle, but it does not raise Nissan's factory figure.

Does the guard panel have to be cut?

Yes, a 111 mm opening plus mounting holes are made in the left guard. The template in the kit makes the cut repeatable and leaves no room for improvisation.

Will it fit my Patrol?

This number covers the 3.0 ZD30-DDTi. If you have a different Y61 engine, send us the VIN and we will find the correct Safari number.

Can I add a cyclonic pre-cleaner?

Yes, a cyclonic pre-cleaner can be mounted on the snorkel head. If you often travel in convoy on gravel, it is the simplest way to extend the life of the filter element.

Does the snorkel change the engine's air supply?

The system is designed to deliver air in excess of the standard ZD30's requirement and works with the original airbox. Treat it as intake protection rather than a performance part.

Is this part number covered by warranty?

Yes. Safari lists a lifetime warranty for SS16HFB, which follows from the industrial specification of the V-Spec line.

Why it is worth it

  • A ZD30 Y61 Patrol is a genuine expedition truck - a snorkel is one of the first sensible upgrades, ahead of suspension.
  • Cleaner air means a longer life for the turbo and the filter element on gravel roads.
  • Lifetime manufacturer warranty on this part number.

If you are preparing your Patrol for a longer trip, ask us about a fitting slot alongside the rest of the build.
