Snorkels
Safari Snorkel SS180R - Toyota Prado 90 3.0 D 1KZ-TE
The Safari R-Spec SS180R is made for the Land Cruiser Prado 90 with the 3.0 D 1KZ-TE engine built 12/1997-12/2002. It raises the intake point to A-pillar height, and the air ram head separates water from the air stream before it reaches the filter. The body is thick-walled, UV-stable polyethylene and a guard panel template is supplied with the kit.
Safari R-Spec Snorkel SS180R - Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 90, 3.0 D 1KZ-TE
A Prado 90 with the 1KZ-TE has spent years on long trips - and that is exactly where its low-mounted factory air intake is the weak point. On a dusty track the filter element clogs at a rate no city driver ever sees, and in a water crossing the risk of drawing water in is real.
SS180R moves the intake up to A-pillar height, where the air is cooler and far cleaner. It is the kind of change you appreciate most a few hundred kilometres into a gravel road.
Vehicle Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 90 | Years 12/1997 - 12/2002 | Engine 3.0 D 1KZ-TE |
Key features
- Air ram head with water separation - rain water is thrown out of the air stream instead of travelling on to the filter element.
- Intake at A-pillar height - less dust and lower intake air temperature than at the factory inlet down in the engine bay.
- Cross-linked, UV-stable polyethylene with substantial wall thickness - the body takes sun, frost and branch contact without cracking.
- Guard panel template supplied - marking and cutting come out repeatable rather than measured by eye.
- The system stays sealed and keeps the factory air cleaner housing - this is not an open-intake conversion.
Fitment
Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 90 (J90) with the 3.0 diesel 1KZ-TE engine, built 12/1997 - 12/2002. The snorkel mounts on the left-hand body side. Prado 90s with other engines - the 3.4 V6 petrol 5VZ-FE, the 2.7 petrol 3RZ-FE or the 3.0 D 1KD-FTV - use their own Safari part numbers, and SS180R will not fit them. Check the engine code before you order.

Installation and notes
Fitting is irreversible. The manufacturer's guide for this application calls for an 83 mm hole saw cut in the guard panel opened out with a saw to the template, a cut-out for the indicator, two 16 mm and one 9.5 mm mounting holes, and four 8 mm holes in the A-pillar. Quoted working time is around 120 minutes. You will need an 83 mm hole saw, a step drill and a body saw.
Difficulty is moderate, but every cut in the guard is final - which is why it is worth handing to someone who has done it before. We can fit the snorkel in our workshop: Szekla4x4 is an online shop, a walk-in store and an off-road and overlanding workshop. Protect the cut edges against corrosion before final assembly.
Frequently asked questions
Will this snorkel let the Prado wade deeper?
No. It protects the air intake, but wading depth is still set by the axles, gearbox, transfer case, wiring and seals. It is protection for the most vulnerable component, not an increase in the factory wading figure.
Does the guard panel have to be cut?
Yes. The instructions call for an 83 mm hole opened out with a saw to the supplied template, plus a cut-out for the indicator. There is no way around cutting the guard.
I have a Prado 90 with the 3.4 V6 petrol - does SS180R fit?
No. SS180R is built for the 1KZ-TE diesel. Safari lists different part numbers for the 3.4 V6 5VZ-FE, the 2.7 3RZ-FE and the 3.0 D 1KD-FTV. Send us your VIN and we will pick the right kit.
Can I add a cyclone pre-cleaner?
Safari does offer pre-cleaners that mount on the intake, but fitment depends on the head version. Get in touch about this part number before you buy one.
Does it change how the engine draws air?
It changes where the air comes from and how clean and cool it is. The snorkel connects to the factory air cleaner housing and stays sealed, so it is neither an open-air conversion nor a replacement intake system.
Why buy it
- A 1KZ-TE Prado 90 is a classic expedition vehicle - the snorkel meaningfully extends filter life over long gravel stages.
- A dedicated kit with a template, not a universal pipe that needs brackets fabricated.
- A part number tied to one specific engine and build window, which takes the guesswork out of fitment.
Not sure which engine version your Prado has? Send us the VIN - we will confirm fitment and give you an installation slot.
