kwikLYNX APEX front sway bar disconnects for the Toyota 4Runner, Tacoma, FJ Cruiser and Lexus GX. An over-centre clamp disconnects and reconnects the bar in a matter of seconds, so you switch the vehicle between trail and tarmac where it stands. Hard coat finish. Installation requires drilling with a 13 mm bit and some light welding; the manufacturer sells a suitable step drill separately.

Toyotas lacked what Jeeps have had for years: a proper sway bar disconnect that is not an improvisation.

kwikLYNX fills that gap — an over-centre clamp disconnects and reconnects the bar in a matter of seconds, in the manufacturer's own words.

Technical data

  • Manufacturer part number: X02-07-001 — M14x1.5 thread, ball joint
  • Second variant: X02-07-002 — M14x2.0 thread, fits the ICON Delta joint
  • Vehicles: 4Runner 2003-2024 (4th and 5th gen), Tacoma 2005-2023 (2nd and 3rd gen), FJ Cruiser from 2007, GX470 2003-2009, GX460 from 2010
  • Not compatible with: vehicles with KDSS; on the GX460 fitting is possible after removing KDSS and replacing it with a standard GX470 or 4Runner bar
  • Not compatible with (2): aftermarket spindle gussets — the manufacturer points to its own Bolt On Spindle Gusset instead
  • TRD skid plate: needs trimming to clear the link
  • With uniball upper control arms: an M14x1.5 bolt of grade 12.9 or higher is required, protruding no more than 0.900" below the knuckle. The manufacturer gives different grades in two places, so we take the stronger one. Want it confirmed before fitting? We will ask APEX

Who it is for

For Toyota 4Runner, Tacoma, FJ Cruiser and Lexus GX owners who drive over obstacles and need real suspension travel. If ride comfort and speed matter more to you, the manufacturer points to airLYNX.

Installation: the work involved and the tools

Installation requires drilling with a 13 mm bit and some light welding — the manufacturer states both plainly, recommends professional installation and notes that the product is not intended to be fitted by a novice. On the Tacoma a section of frame brace also has to be cut off and ground flush. It is worth watching the instructional video the manufacturer links to before you start.

Tools: the step drill with a 1/4" drive (sold separately), a torque wrench reaching 100 ft-lbs, an M10x1.5 nutsert tool and a bike shock pump.

Two things to deal with before fitting: take off any aftermarket sway bar relocation brackets, and replace the shock reservoir mount if you run one.

After fitting: pressure, torque figures and warranty

The link contains an air cylinder that has to be charged to 100 PSI with the suspension at full droop, and the safety clip has to be in place. You check the pressure annually and top it up if needed — that is what the bike shock pump is for.

Torque figures: the nylock nut goes to 30 ft-lbs with a 19 mm wrench, 22 ft-lbs on the second joint, and 70 ft-lbs on the ball joint, with a torque wrench mandatory and the supplied crow's foot.

The warranty is void if you do not provide clearance where the modifications call for it, or do not check full articulation by cycling the suspension through its whole travel.

Frequently asked questions

How does kwikLYNX differ from airLYNX?

kwikLYNX disconnects the bar by about 80%, airLYNX by about 50%. kwikLYNX is better over obstacles because it gives more travel; airLYNX gives better comfort and suits higher speeds.

Is drilling required?

Yes, with a 13 mm bit, and there is light welding on top of that — plus, on the Tacoma, cutting off and grinding down part of a frame brace. The manufacturer recommends having the job done by a workshop.

Will it work on a vehicle with KDSS?

No. On the GX460 fitting is only possible once the factory KDSS is removed and replaced with a standard GX470 or 4Runner bar.

Which thread should I choose?

X02-07-001 has an M14x1.5 thread for the ball joint. The M14x2.0 version for the ICON Delta joint is the separate part X02-07-002.
