A set of heavy-duty MetalCloak ball joints for the Jeep Wrangler JK 2007–2018 in the knurled version — a housing with increased interference fit, made for worn or oversized axle C bores, with no need to replace the housing. Upper and lower joints are both load bearing, with adjustable preload, recessed zerk fittings and in-vehicle rebuildability. Four joints and a service wrench included. 4–5 hours to fit, no modification. Not compatible with Teraflex D44 axles.

MetalCloak Baller Joints™ HD Knurled Ball Joints, Full Set, Jeep Wrangler JK

Worn ball joints on a JK are not a comfort issue. They mean play at the wheel, wandering on the straight and, at worst, death wobble. Replacing them with factory parts usually ends the same way a few tens of thousands of kilometres later — and if the axle C bores have opened up in the meantime, a new joint no longer holds its press fit and the problem comes straight back.

This version of the Baller Joints is engineered for exactly that case. The housing is knurled: a precision-cut surface that increases the interference fit and restores secure retention in a bore that will no longer hold a standard joint — without replacing the axle housing.

First check whether you need the knurled version

This is the important decision with this product, and we would rather you did not get it wrong.

  • The axle C bores are worn or oversized — high mileage, joints already replaced once, the last new joint went in too easily, or play appears despite fresh parts. Then this is the right version.
  • The bores are in good condition — then the standard Baller Joints set (part no. 1910) is the right choice, without knurling. Pressing a knurled housing into a healthy bore is unnecessary work on a part nobody will repair later.

Not sure which group you are in? Get in touch or bring the vehicle in — judging the bore is a matter of looking at the axle and measuring. We will order the version you actually need.

Compatibility — what fits and what does not

  • Jeep Wrangler JK 2007–2018 — Dana 30 and Dana 44, both factory options.
  • RCV axle shafts — MetalCloak designed the Baller Joints to work with RCV shafts with no change to installation or maintenance.
  • Dynatrac ProRock 44 — the manufacturer confirms this as a proven combination, run in its own shop vehicles.
  • ⚠ Teraflex aftermarket D44 axles — do NOT fit. The Teraflex housing has a recessed pocket the joint sits into, which interferes with the adjustment collar and prevents proper preload from being set. That is a design limitation the knurled version does not get around.

Key benefits

  • Knurled housing – greater interference fit in the axle C, less movement inside the axle, retention restored where a standard joint no longer holds.
  • Upper and lower joints both load bearing – preload on the upper joint takes force off the lower one and shares the load between two pivot points instead of one.
  • Adjustable preload – play is taken up by adjustment rather than replacement. That is the difference between a joint that lasts years and one that lasts a season.
  • Rebuildable in the vehicle – a threaded assembly accessible from the top. MetalCloak offers separate rebuild kits (part nos. 1918 and 1920).
  • Captured design – an aluminium lock nut and a threaded top cap capture the joint in the bore, so there is no physical possibility of pulling it out.
  • Fully sealed – O-rings top and bottom plus shaft wiper seals. Recessed zerk fittings allow greasing without disassembly.
  • Materials – induction hardened chromoly spindle and ball, hardened S7 tool steel races, composite bushing load rated at over 23,000 lbs each.
  • Service wrench included – laser cut from 3/16in steel in a gold zinc finish, made to fit the lower joint.

Who they are for

For JKs with mileage and history — vehicles whose joints have already been replaced once and whose axle bores have seen it all. They make particular sense on larger tyres and a lift, where loads on the joints rise and factory parts wear out faster. This is a "last time I deal with this" purchase: the joints are adjustable, greaseable and rebuildable, so the next bit of play is taken up with a wrench rather than a new part.

Installation notes

MetalCloak rates the install as moderate and allows 4–5 hours, with no modification to the vehicle. The process is close to fitting ordinary ball joints, with one extra step: setting the preload. It is work that needs a press and experience — and, with worn bores, a judgement on whether knurling is enough or the axle housing itself is due for replacement. That cannot be settled remotely.

Ongoing maintenance is simple: 1–2 pumps of grease at every oil change. Adjustment is only needed if play appears.

Szekla4x4.pl is an authorised MetalCloak dealer with a workshop specialising in off-road suspension — we will look at the axle, fit the joints and set the geometry. An alignment is mandatory after any work on the steering and suspension.

Why they are worth it

  • They solve the problem factory joints do not: a worn-out bore in the axle C.
  • Preload adjustment instead of replacement — play is taken up at a service, not at the next purchase.
  • Rebuildable without pulling the axle, with the dedicated wrench in the box.
  • Made in the USA from top-tier materials — a long-term part rather than a consumable.

Frequently asked questions

How does the knurled version differ from the standard one?

The housing has a cut surface that increases the interference fit in the axle C. It is intended for worn or oversized bores. With bores in good condition the standard set (part no. 1910) is the right choice.

Is this a set for the whole vehicle?

Yes — two upper joints, two lower joints and the service wrench. Nothing extra is needed for the other side.

Do they fit the Dana 30 axle on a Sport?

Yes. MetalCloak confirms they work with both the Dana 30 and the Dana 44 in the JK.

Do they fit RCV axle shafts?

Yes. MetalCloak designed the JK and JL/JT Baller Joints to work with RCV shafts — with no change to installation and no difficulty greasing them.

Do they fit Teraflex D44 axles?

No. The Teraflex housing has a recessed pocket the joint sits into, and it interferes with the adjustment collar — proper preload cannot be set. The knurled version does not change that.

What about the Dynatrac ProRock 44?

Yes. MetalCloak lists this as a proven combination, used in its own shop vehicles.

What maintenance do they need?

1–2 pumps of grease at every oil change. Preload adjustment only if play appears.

Can they be rebuilt?

Yes, and without removing them from the vehicle. The assembly is threaded and accessible from the top, and MetalCloak offers separate rebuild kits (part nos. 1918 and 1920).

Can play be taken up without replacing them?

Yes. Both joints have adjustable preload — that is the fundamental difference from factory joints, which cannot be adjusted at all.

Do they need greasing?

Yes — MetalCloak specifies 1–2 pumps of grease at every oil change. That is what the recessed zerk fittings are for, and it is the whole routine.

Does fitting require modifying the vehicle?

No. MetalCloak specifies: no body modification, 4–5 hours of work, moderate difficulty.
