A set of heavy-duty MetalCloak ball joints for the Jeep Wrangler JK 2007–2018. Both joints — upper and lower — are load bearing and have adjustable preload, recessed zerk fittings and a threaded assembly that can be rebuilt in the vehicle. Induction hardened chromoly, S7 tool steel races, made in the USA. Four joints and a service wrench included. Fits Dana 30 and Dana 44 axles and RCV shafts. 4–5 hours to fit, no modification. This is the version for bores in good condition — worn bores call for the knurled version (1913).

MetalCloak Baller Joints™ HD Ball Joints, Full Set, Jeep Wrangler JK

Factory ball joints on a JK share one trait: once play appears, the only option is to throw them away. They cannot be adjusted, greased or taken apart. The result is wandering on the straight, knocking over bumps and, on larger tyres, a real risk of death wobble.

The Baller Joints are built on the opposite premise. Both joints — upper and lower — have adjustable preload, recessed zerk fittings and a threaded assembly that can be rebuilt without pulling the axle off the vehicle. Play is taken up with a wrench at a service rather than with a new part every couple of years.

This is the standard version — and the right one for most vehicles

MetalCloak offers two versions of the JK set. This one is for axle C bores in good condition — which covers the large majority of vehicles.

The knurled version (part no. 1913) has a housing with increased interference fit and is meant for worn or oversized bores: ones where a standard joint now goes in too easily, or where play appears despite fresh parts. Pressing a knurled housing into a healthy bore gains nothing and works a part nobody will repair later.

Two joints carry the load instead of one

This is what most separates the Baller Joints from typical replacements. In a standard setup the entire load falls on the lower joint, with the upper acting purely as a pivot. Preload on the Baller Joints' upper joint transfers part of the force to it and shares it between two pivot points — the lower joint works less hard and lasts longer.

Force load comparison: typical ball joints versus MetalCloak Baller Joints
Left, the typical arrangement: 100% of the force load on the lower joint. Right, the Baller Joints: the load shared between both.

Key benefits

  • Adjustable preload, upper and lower – play is taken up by adjustment, not replacement. That is the fundamental difference from factory joints.
  • Rebuildable in the vehicle – a threaded assembly accessible from the top. MetalCloak offers separate rebuild kits (part nos. 1918 and 1920).
  • Captured design – the joint presses in from the bottom of the C, then an aluminium lock nut and a threaded top cap capture it. There is no physical possibility of pulling a joint out.
  • Fully sealed and greaseable – O-rings top and bottom, wiper seals on the shafts, recessed zerk fittings. Servicing is 1–2 pumps of grease at every oil change.
  • Induction hardened chromoly spindle and ball – a wear-resistant surface on a material that absorbs impact energy without fracturing, with a maximised bearing area.
  • Hardened S7 tool steel races – concave, with maximum contact area. They spread force loads and eliminate memory steer.
  • Composite bushing load rated at over 23,000 lbs each – it takes the radial loads, meaning side-to-side movement.
  • Service wrench included – laser cut from 3/16in steel in a gold zinc finish, made to fit the lower joint.
  • Made in the USA, finished in gold zinc, clear zinc and Type III hard anodize.

Compatibility — what fits and what does not

  • Jeep Wrangler JK 2007–2018 — Dana 30 and Dana 44, both factory options.
  • RCV axle shafts — MetalCloak designed the Baller Joints to work with RCV shafts with no change to installation or maintenance.
  • Dynatrac ProRock 44 — the manufacturer confirms this as a proven combination, run in its own shop vehicles.
  • Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ, and XJ axles with WJ knuckles — the WJ uses the same ball joint as the JK, so this set fits.
  • ⚠ Teraflex aftermarket D44 axles — do NOT fit. The Teraflex housing has a recessed pocket the joint sits into, which interferes with the adjustment collar and prevents proper preload from being set.

Who they are for

For JK owners who are tired of replacing ball joints. They make particular sense on larger tyres and a lift, where loads on the joints rise and factory parts wear out noticeably faster. This is a "last time I deal with this" purchase: the parts are adjustable, greaseable and rebuildable, so the next bit of play is a matter of a wrench rather than another order.

Installation and maintenance

MetalCloak rates the install as moderate and allows 4–5 hours, with no modification to the vehicle. The process is close to fitting ordinary ball joints, with one extra step: setting the preload. That step decides whether the joints work as they should — and it is the one that most often causes trouble on a home install. MetalCloak's own instructions have drawn criticism from customers on exactly this point.

Ongoing maintenance is simple: 1–2 pumps of grease at every oil change. Adjustment is only needed if play appears.

Szekla4x4.pl is an authorised MetalCloak dealer with a workshop specialising in off-road suspension — we will fit the joints, set the preload and do the alignment. An alignment is mandatory after any work on the steering and suspension.

Why they are worth it

  • A ball joint you adjust, instead of a ball joint you throw away.
  • Load shared across two pivot points rather than concentrated on the lower joint.
  • Rebuildable without pulling the axle, with the wrench in the box and rebuild kits available.
  • Top-tier materials and USA manufacture — a long-term part, not a consumable.

Frequently asked questions

Do they fit the Dana 30 axle on a Sport?

Yes. MetalCloak confirms they work with both the Dana 30 and the Dana 44 in the JK.

Do they fit RCV axle shafts?

Yes. MetalCloak designed the JK and JL/JT Baller Joints to work with RCV shafts — with no change to installation and no difficulty greasing them.

Do they fit Teraflex D44 axles?

No. The Teraflex housing has a recessed pocket the joint sits into, and it interferes with the adjustment collar — proper preload cannot be set.

What about the Dynatrac ProRock 44?

Yes. MetalCloak lists this as a proven combination, used in its own shop vehicles.

How do they differ from the knurled version (1913)?

The knurled version has a housing with increased interference fit and is intended for worn or oversized bores. This version is the right one for bores in good condition.

What maintenance do they need?

1–2 pumps of grease at every oil change. Preload adjustment only if play appears.

Can they be rebuilt?

Yes, without removing them from the vehicle. MetalCloak offers separate rebuild kits (part nos. 1918 and 1920).

Is this a set for the whole vehicle?

Yes — two upper joints, two lower joints and the service wrench. Nothing extra is needed for the other side.

Does fitting require modifying the vehicle?

No. MetalCloak specifies: no body modification, 4–5 hours of work, moderate difficulty.
