MetalCloak Overline rocker rails for the 4-door Jeep Wrangler JK Unlimited 2007-2018, black textured powder coat. Fully welded: CAD formed 3/16in steel plate plus 1½in x .120 tubing. The deflector plate pushes obstacles outwards. Hi-Lift points and a built-in step. Bolt-on — no cutting, no welding, and “minimal drilling” according to customers.

MetalCloak Overline Rocker Rails (rock sliders), Black Powder Coat, Jeep Wrangler JK Unlimited 4-Door (pair)

On a 4-door JK the rocker is close to two metres long, and along all of it, it is what the vehicle catches a rock with. This is the part you reach for when you know the vehicle is going to lie down on its side — and you expect it to drive off again.

The construction is fully welded: 3/16in steel plate (4.8 mm) CAD formed, with 1½in × .120 tubing welded on as the rub rail, plus welded gussets. Then the geometry: the integrated deflector plate pushes an obstacle outwards rather than letting it catch — the manufacturer's comparison is a boat hull.

Three features as standard

  • Hi-Lift jack points built into the structure. One of the manufacturer's customers tested them straight after fitting and put it briefly: "after bolted on i test the high lift point and it was very solid." The manufacturer adds its own warning: "Always use extreme caution when lifting your Jeep" — lifting by the rocker needs firm ground.
  • A built-in step. On a lifted 4-door with big tyres it is used every day, by rear passengers too.
  • Approach and departure angles. The rail does not hang lower than it has to — the deflector angles outwards, not down.

Installation: no cutting, no welding

The manufacturer says it plainly: "No body modification, cutting or welding needed; just drill a few holes and bolt on." Difficulty: easy, time 2–4 hours.

? The reviews back that up, and this is a clear difference from the ExoSkin plates, where customers complained about the amount of drilling. Here: "Easy install with jack stands and 1 person. Minimal drilling, very solid", "Installation was pretty easy by myself", "took longer to prep and paint than to install".

? One practical tip recurs here too: get a riv-nut tool for the inserts — "much faster and foolproof".

⚠ The rating: 80% from eight reviews — and it is worth knowing where that comes from

Seven of the eight are positive, and two of them speak directly to strength in exactly the conditions this product is for:

  • A customer running them for two years across a couple of dozen trails rated 6 to 8: "they gouged up pretty good underneath, but still as straight as the day I put them on."
  • A customer who replaced his factory Rubicon rock rails with these a week before his first trip to the Rubicon Trail: "they got a workout on the rocks! Held up very well, no bends or dents after taking some hard shots. Pretty sure if I had the stock rails on there would have been body damage that they helped avoid."

? There is however one negative review (1/5, 2021) and we think it should be read before buying. The customer — a user of the full MetalCloak armour setup — reports that after an easy Rubicon Trail run with no hard obstacles, the right rail folded against the body and the internal reinforcement tabs punctured the tub. He was also unhappy with the customer service response.

The manufacturer replied publicly under that review, and we quote that too: "Very sorry about your experience. I've personally dropped my JK on the Rocker Rails from 3' straight down on a large bolder with no damage other than powdercoat. As far as the response from customer service, it is never our goal to have that attitude, we have award winning support and a lifetime customer service guarantee for a reason."

Our position: that is one reported case out of eight reviews, and the others describe two years on hard trails with no deformation. We cannot settle what happened in that instance — but we think a buyer is entitled to know about it. We are an authorised MetalCloak dealer, and any warranty claim is handled by us with the manufacturer, not by the customer.

? The rail and the plate are two layers of one system

3316 — rocker ExoSkinstiffens the rocker metal and spreads load into the bodyin our range

The manufacturer calls the ExoSkins optional: "Combined with the optional Exo-Skins, you have full, rock-biting, functional protection for your rig." The rail alone is enough for off-road use; the plate adds a layer where the vehicle leans its whole side onto rock.

⚠ If both are planned, order them together. Then the holes are drilled once, from one trial fit, rather than twice into the same metal. It also avoids the problem some customers describe, where the ExoSkin's lower bolts fouled rails that were already fitted.

What's in the kit

  • 2 × Overline rocker rail (driver and passenger), fully welded
  • all required hardware

⚠ The rocker ExoSkins are not part of this kit — they are a separate item (MC3316).

Who it's for

For 4-door JKs that go where the rocker meets stone. 3/16in plate and welded tube is a different class of thing from the common thin-tube sliders on brackets — and a different weight: close to 38 kg a pair.

Also for anyone starting a build with the sliders. It is a good first piece of armour: it protects the most exposed part of the vehicle and needs nothing else to work.

For the full Overline set we also stock the rocker ExoSkins (3316), the front tube fenders and flares, the rear ExoSkin (3410) and the rear flares.

Installation notes

Close to 38 kg a pair — trial fitting takes two people or a lift, though the manufacturer's customers did it single-handed on jack stands. The install itself is straightforward; the risk is in where the holes go, not in the difficulty of the work.

⚠ Planning to paint them body colour? The manufacturer requires a test fit before painting and does not cover the cost of any custom finish applied. With the powder coated version we sell, that does not arise.

Szekla4x4.pl is an authorised MetalCloak dealer with a workshop specialising in Jeeps — we will fit the rails together with the plates or the rest of the armour in one visit.

Why they're worth it

  • 3/16in plate and welded tube — built for actually leaning on rock.
  • The deflector plate pushes obstacles away instead of letting them catch.
  • Hi-Lift points and a step come as standard, at no extra cost.
  • Bolt-on, and "minimal drilling" according to customers — unlike the ExoSkin plates.
  • Black textured powder coat — consistent with the rest of the MetalCloak armour.

Frequently asked questions

Will it fit a 2-door JK?

No. The 2-door has its own part number, 3310, which we stock.

Do I have to buy the ExoSkins as well?

No. The manufacturer describes them as optional. The rail is a complete solution on its own.

Is any cutting or welding needed?

No. No body modification, no cutting and no welding — a few holes and bolts. Customers describe it as "minimal drilling".

Can I lift the vehicle on them with a Hi-Lift?

Yes, the points are built in, and one of the manufacturer's customers tested his after fitting and rated them very solid. Always on firm ground and with extreme care.

What about that one negative review?

We set it out in full above, together with the manufacturer's reply. It is one reported case out of eight; the others describe two years on hard trails without deformation. Any warranty claim is handled by us.

How much do they weigh?

Around 38 kg a pair. That is real added mass — worth remembering when choosing coils.

What is the lead time?

3–5 weeks at the manufacturer plus transport to Poland — it is made to order. If you take the ExoSkins too, we ship it as one order.
