Full size template included. ⚠ For factory fenders and Overland flares the part is 3414 instead.

MetalCloak Overline Rear Flare Mounting ExoSkin, Black Powder Coat, Jeep Wrangler JK 2-Door (pair)

The rear quarter panel on a JK is thin body sheet with nothing behind it. One rock while manoeuvring and you have a dent that cannot be worked out without stripping half the rear.

The ExoSkin is 1/8in steel plate (3.2 mm) bolted over the factory skin — a second skin. But it is not just armour: it has the mounting system for the Overline rear flares built in, with aluminium brackets and all the hardware.

The manufacturer puts it plainly: "The weak body of the JK requires the use of the rear Exo-Skins so that we can raise the Dovetailed fender and gain all that additional clearance!" — and states the result: 37in tyres on a stock JK.

? The key point: this is the version for Overline flares

The manufacturer answered this directly in its Q&A, asked about factory flares: "The ExoSkins are designed for our high clearance fender flares… for factory fenders, or the Overland rear flares, use Product ID 3414, JK Wrangler Extended ExoSkin, Rear, 2-Door."

Two jobs in one part

  • Armour. 1/8in plate bolted to the skin stops the rear quarter being the weakest panel on the vehicle. The manufacturer: "add a TON of additional strength by plating the sheet metal with 1/8" steel".
  • The flare mounting system. The hardware that carries the Overline rear flares is built into the plate. That is what lets the flare sit higher than the factory arch — and that is where the tyre clearance comes from.

⚠ Installation: drilling and riv-nuts

The manufacturer rates it moderate, 2–3 hours, with body modification listed as "Some Drilling". In practice that means dozens of holes in the rear quarter and riv-nuts set into them. It cannot be undone. A full size template is included.

? One of the manufacturer's customers put it honestly: "A lot of rivnuts to install, a little scary to drill into a perfect rear tub but the results are amazing great protection for the rear half of your JK."

? A note for owners of other brands' rock sliders

A 2025 review settles a question that blocks a lot of purchases: a customer running Poison Spyder Brawler rockers writes that the ExoSkins "do fit (just need to be cut a little), and the mounting point for the flare stays outside of the area that needs trimming". So the trimming does not compromise the mounting function.

Overline rear flares — what completes it

The ExoSkin can stand alone as armour. Its second function only comes into play with flares — and we stock all three widths: narrow (3425), standard 6in (3426) and wide (3427).

At the front the Overline system is complete here too: tube fenders (3214), flares in three widths, and the aluminium inner fender wells (3291 and 3293).

Who it's for

For owners of 2-door JKs building for big tyres who want to do it without cutting the body. And for anyone who runs rocks — after the rockers, the rear quarter is what takes the most damage.

100% from five reviews at the manufacturer.

Installation notes

This is a calm two to three hours: vehicle on its wheels, edges taped, template screwed down solid. The risk is rushing the drilling — a hole in the wrong place in a rear quarter is there for good. It is worth having your own spare riv-nuts.

⚠ For custom paint the manufacturer requires a test fit before painting and does not cover the cost of any finish applied. With the powder coated version that does not arise.

Frequently asked questions

Will it fit a 4-door JK?

No. The 4-door has its own part number, 3410, which we stock.

Can I use factory flares?

The manufacturer says no, not with this version. For factory fenders and Overland flares the part is the 3414 Extended ExoSkin. Get in touch and we will match it.

Are the flares included?

No. This is the plates with the mounting only. The flares (3425 / 3426 / 3427) are a separate item.

Can it be combined with another brand's rock sliders?

One of the manufacturer's customers confirms it for Poison Spyder Brawler rockers, after light trimming. For other brands, get in touch before ordering.

What is the lead time?

3–5 weeks at the manufacturer plus transport. One customer notes, though, that ordering it with the flares he had the set in under a week — lead times can beat the quoted figure.
