MetalCloak UnderCloak Integrated Armor System, Gold Zinc, Jeep Wrangler JK Unlimited 4-Door

Most underbody armour is "just a couple of cut pieces of steel bolted to the bottom of a Jeep" — that is how the manufacturer describes the competition. The UnderCloak is something else: one formed system covering the underside front to back, replacing the factory cross member as well.

The whole thing weighs 190 lb, around 86 kg. This is not an accessory — it changes the mass and the character of the vehicle.

What it actually protects — four plates plus the cross member

  • Oil pan and motor skid — 1/4in (6.4 mm) steel, the thickest piece in the system. Tucked as high as possible to preserve approach angle, with an access hole for the drain plug and filter.
  • Transmission and transfer case skid — 3/16in steel, boat sided: rocks and logs slide under the vehicle rather than stopping it.
  • Gas tank skid — 3/16in steel, also boat sided.
  • Upgraded cross member in 3/16in steel, replacing the factory one. The manufacturer states it was CAD designed using Jeep's own digital files, with additional attachment points on the driver side.
  • Motor skid brackets and all required hardware.

? Why gold zinc rather than powder coat

This is the one MetalCloak family with no black powder coat variant — and there is a reason. The manufacturer: "GOLD zinc plating… forms a molecular bond to the steel protecting it from the elements even after being abused."

On underbody armour that matters in practice: paint or powder comes off at the first rock and rust starts underneath. The zinc stays in the metal. The surface can be painted later if you want.

? The bolts: the manufacturer explains why they are NOT recessed

This is one of the better pieces of technical writing we have found from this manufacturer, because it explains a decision that looks like a flaw at first glance:

"When products are new they fit just fine… now go bash them on the trail and see how they line up, they don't! In critical areas for attachment that can get misaligned we have encapsulated the head of the bolts with skid guard washers and afforded slotted holes to ease re-installation when servicing your Jeep."

That is the difference between armour designed for the catalogue and armour designed for the second time it comes off.

? Manufacturer answers that settle the usual worries

  • Oil changes: "The Undercloaks are designed with an Access Hole for getting to the drain plug keeping oil changes easy." The skid does not have to come off.
  • MetalCloak long arms: "Yes, our UnderCloak skid systems are designed to work with our long arm kits without added modification."
  • Front control arm correction brackets: "Yes, the UnderCloak Skid Plates will work with our front Control Arm Pro'lignment brackets."

All three products named — the long arm systems (MC7278, MC7279) and the Pro'lignment brackets (MC7073) — are in our range.

⚠ Model year variant — important when ordering

The manufacturer makes this system in two model year versions: 2007–2011 and 2012 and newer. The price here is for the 2012+ version; the 2007–2011 version carries a small surcharge at the manufacturer.

Give us the model year when ordering — we will order the right version and confirm the price if the surcharge applies to you.

⚠ Weight: 86 kg is a real change to the vehicle

We say this plainly because it is the most important consequence of this purchase after the price. 86 kg hung low under the floor:

  • lowers the centre of gravity — which works in favour of stability;
  • loads the springs — on coils chosen with no margin the vehicle will sit down. If a lift is planned or already fitted, work it out together;
  • raises the shipping cost — at this mass freight is a significant part of the price, and it is already included in it.

Who it's for

For JK owners who run rocks and are tired of wondering what just caught the underside. The fuel tank, transfer case and oil pan are the three most expensive things to damage from below on a JK.

100% from nineteen reviews at the manufacturer — one of the best and most reviewed items in the whole MetalCloak range.

Installation notes

The manufacturer rates it moderate, 3–4 hours, with no body modification — everything goes into factory points and the cross member replaces the original. It is a job for a lift and two people, because the pieces are heavy.

Szekla4x4.pl is an authorised MetalCloak dealer with a workshop specialising in Jeeps — we will fit the system alongside suspension or side armour in one visit.

Frequently asked questions

Is any cutting or drilling needed?

No. The manufacturer lists body modification as "none" — the system goes into factory points.

Will oil changes be harder?

No. The manufacturer: an access hole for the drain plug is built into the skid.

Does it fit MetalCloak long arms?

Yes, the manufacturer confirms it directly — without added modification.

Does it fit the 2-door JK?

No. That body has part number 3365, which we also stock.

Which model year version should I order?

Tell us the year — the manufacturer makes separate versions for 2007–2011 and 2012+. We will order the right one.

Can I paint it black?

Yes, the manufacturer states the gold zinc surface is paintable. Worth knowing, though, that the point of the plating is that it protects the steel even after being scraped — paint does not.

What is the lead time?

The manufacturer ships in 2–3 business days — by far the shortest in the whole MetalCloak range. Transport to Poland comes on top.
