MetalCloak — Lo-Profile LED taillight kit with aluminium housings, Jeep Wrangler JK

The factory JK taillights stick out past the body line and are among the first things to get caught when threading between trees. This kit replaces them with a machined 6061 T6 aircraft aluminium housing and a recessed LED lamp — the whole assembly sits noticeably flatter than stock.

The kit works on its own as a stock taillight replacement or as part of the ExoCorner system (MC3430, which we stock).

What is in the kit

• Driver and passenger housings — 6061 T6 aluminium, Type III black anodized (hard anodizing)

Why the resistors

LEDs draw far less current than bulbs, so the indicator relay starts flashing at double speed (“hyper-blinking") and the vehicle can throw a bulb-out warning. The supplied resistors fix both — the flash rate returns to the factory rate and no dashboard warnings appear.

Worth knowing: the resistors get hot in use — hence the finned heat sink. Mount them to metal, away from looms and plastic parts.

⚠ Road legality — read before ordering

The manufacturer states the lamps are SAE/DOT compliant. That is the US standard. MetalCloak publishes no European “E" mark for these lamps.

In practice that means they may be challenged at a Polish periodic inspection or roadside check. If you drive on public roads, contact us before ordering and we will talk it through.

? Being straight about the reviews: moisture in the lens

The manufacturer rating is 88% of 100 from 10 reviews — and that is not random. Two of the lower reviews are about condensation inside the lamps after a year or two of use. One customer also reports the housing curvature not matching the body perfectly.

For balance: the manufacturer replies in those same reviews and replaced the lamps in both cases, and one customer noted that the replacement already had the bench-test holes on the back sealed with epoxy — a design correction. The manufacturer also refers to “a small batch that had some issues a while back".

We state this plainly so you know what to look for on delivery and after the first season.

FAQ

Does it work without ExoCorners?

Yes. The kit bolts into the factory light positions and works on its own.

Will the indicators hyper-flash?

Not if you fit the supplied resistors. Without them, yes.

How does it differ from MC3435?

MC3435 uses a moulded plastic housing and costs less. This kit has a machined aluminium housing with hard anodizing.

Is drilling required?

The manufacturer lists “some drilling and wiring". The housings go into the factory positions — the drilling is mainly for mounting the resistors.
