MetalCloak — tub-mount spare tire carrier, Jeep Wrangler JK

The strongest tire carrier MetalCloak builds for the JK. The manufacturer calls it a “no compromise design" — and it looks the part: 1.50in × .120 wall steel tube reinforced with 3/16in steel plate and gussets, mounted at the factory tailgate hinge locations.

This is for people carrying a 40in spare who do not want to hear it over every bump.

Why it does not rattle

• Delrin isolator bushings on the swing axis — a low-friction engineering plastic that does not wear out like rubber or knock like metal on metal
• Push-button locking pins plus a swing-out stop pin — the arm stays where you put it and does not swing back onto your fingers
• Extra tub bracketry included — the load spreads into the structure, not into bare sheet metal

Adjustment and tyre size

Backspacing — which mount

The carrier needs a tire mount. The manufacturer offers two ranges:

• 3.75in – 5.25in (narrower) — the standard version on this card, part no. 3954
• 4.75in – 6.45in (wider) — part no. 3953

The price on this card includes the 3.75in–5.25in mount. If your wheel needs the wider range, contact us and we will swap it. We also stock both mounts separately.

Tool-less removal option

The carrier can be optioned with quick-release push-button T handles in place of the bolts. The whole carrier then comes off the Jeep without tools — useful if you run without a rear tyre day to day and fit it for trips. It is a paid option; contact us and we will add it to the order.

Does the tub need drilling?

The carrier uses the factory tailgate hinge points and comes with its own tub bracketry. The exact fitting depends on the configuration — contact us if you want the instructions before buying.

Will a 40in tyre really fit?

Yes — the manufacturer rates this design at 40in.

Can I remove the carrier without tools?
