The Vigo's fuel tank sits low and far from the axle, so on a drop-off it is the first thing to touch ground. This version puts 6 mm of aluminium underneath it — the thickness at which a single hard hit leaves a dent rather than a hole.

6.0 mm aluminium. Rival specifies 6.0 mm aluminium in silver. On a panel as large as a tank plate the extra material buys stiffness as well as puncture resistance: the plate flexes less along its length and does not drum against the tank.

Installation. The fitting kit is included and the plate uses factory mounting points. Given the weight of this particular panel, a lift and two people make the job much easier.

Fitment. Toyota Hilux 2005-2011 and 2011-2015. The catalogue name lists 2.7 l petrol, 2.5 l and 3.0 l diesel engines; the technical description refers to the Hilux Vigo 2.5 from 2007-2015.

If the truck runs a heavy canopy or carries load in the bed, the 6 mm option makes extra sense — a loaded rear end sits lower and finds obstacles more often.
