Old Man Emu PB005R parabolic leaf spring for the Toyota Hilux from 2015 (diesel), rear axle, in the constant 300 kg load option. This is the choice for a vehicle that permanently carries a canopy, drawers, an auxiliary tank or work equipment. The spring then holds ride height and control instead of working at the end of its travel. The manufacturer requires it to be fitted together with the dedicated OMEAB001 air bag kit.
A parabolic leaf spring follows a different philosophy from a classic multi-leaf pack. It has fewer leaves, each one shorter than the last and tapering towards the ends, so the whole pack flexes more smoothly. In practice this changes the character of the vehicle: the rear end stops skipping over transverse bumps and no longer hammers over every joint in the tarmac when the tray is empty. The higher grade of steel and the lower leaf count also make the pack considerably lighter than an equivalent multi-leaf one – easier and safer to fit, and kinder to the vehicle's weight budget.
OME part number PB005R | Load constant 300 kg | Rear lift about 40 mm |
The Old Man Emu suspension application chart confirms part number PB005R for:
The part number appears in kits built around Nitrocharger Plus, MT64 and BP-51 shock absorbers, with an estimated rear lift of about 40 mm, across the full range of front-end equipment: from a vehicle with no accessories, through light and steel bull bars, to a bar with a winch and full accessories. In the OE coil adapter variant the chart gives 0 mm of lift.
The rule is the same as with multi-leaf springs: pick the option closest to the full, everyday weight of the vehicle – the weight that is unlikely to change. You do not choose a spring for the maximum load that happens twice a year; variable weight is what the air bags are for. A correctly chosen spring holds ride height, control and comfort in daily use.
This is not an option. Both the importer and the Old Man Emu suspension application chart state that parabolic leaf springs are fitted only together with the dedicated air bag kit. It follows directly from the design: fewer leaves mean less reserve for variable load, and that reserve is taken over by the air bags. For the PB004R, PB005R and PB006R springs the matching kit is OMEAB001. The air bag kit allows up to 600 kg of variable weight to be added (300 kg per bag) with pressure adjustable from 0 to 45 psi.
Replacing leaf springs is workshop work: vehicle on a hoist, axle supported, old packs released from the shackles. It is worth replacing the shackles with the greasable version at the same time – worn bushes will spoil the effect of a new spring. The chassis carries most of the load through the spring hangers, while variable load is taken by the air bags and their brackets. After fitting, check the alignment, brake line clearance and the load-sensing valve setting if the vehicle has one.

Can I fit parabolic springs without air bags?
No. Both the importer and the Old Man Emu chart list the air bags as a mandatory part with parabolic leaf springs. For this spring the matching kit is OMEAB001.
Will a parabolic spring lift the vehicle?
The Old Man Emu chart gives an estimated rear lift of about 40 mm for these springs, in kits with Nitrocharger Plus, MT64 and BP-51 shock absorbers.
How different does a parabolic spring feel?
Smoother flex and fewer leaves working against each other. It shows most with an empty tray, where a factory multi-leaf pack is simply harsh.
Is the price for one spring or an axle set?
The price refers to the importer's catalogue item. We confirm it before dispatch – get in touch before placing the order.
We can put the whole set together: parabolic leaf springs, the OMEAB001 air bag kit, OME shock absorbers and greasable shackles. Send us the year, engine and what the vehicle carries permanently, and we will match the load option.
