Body lift kits for 4x4 vehicles

A body lift raises the body of a body-on-frame 4x4 vehicle by installing dedicated spacer blocks between the chassis and the original body mounting points. The body is raised by a specified amount, while the frame, axles and suspension components remain at their original height.

This solution creates additional space inside the wheel arches and, depending on the vehicle and its other modifications, may allow larger tyres to be fitted. A body lift can be used on its own or combined with a suspension lift.

What are the benefits of a body lift?

The main advantages include:

  • additional clearance between the tyres and wheel arches,
  • the possibility of fitting larger tyres,
  • raised body panels and sills relative to the chassis,
  • no change to suspension geometry,
  • factory spring and shock absorber travel remains unchanged,
  • it can complement an existing suspension lift.

A body lift does not raise the frame, axles or suspension components. It therefore does not directly increase ground clearance underneath the axles. Additional axle clearance can only be achieved by fitting tyres with a larger overall diameter.

Body lift or suspension lift?

A body lift raises only the vehicle body relative to the frame. A suspension lift changes the position of the chassis relative to the axles or wheels and may affect control-arm geometry, driveshaft angles, steering components and shock absorber operation.

If the main objective is to gain additional room for larger tyres without rebuilding the suspension, a body lift may be the right solution. Vehicles intended for more demanding off-road use often combine a body lift with a properly designed suspension lift.

What can a body lift kit include?

The contents depend on the vehicle and the amount of lift. A vehicle-specific kit may include:

  • body lift spacer blocks,
  • extended mounting bolts,
  • sleeves and additional mounting hardware,
  • bumper relocation brackets,
  • fan-shroud relocation components,
  • brackets or extensions for hoses, cables and linkages.

Not every kit contains all of these parts. Depending on the vehicle and lift height, modifications to the bumpers, steering shaft, gear selector, fuel filler or components running between the body and chassis may be required.

Choosing the correct body lift kit

A body lift must be selected for the exact vehicle configuration. Before ordering, check:

  • make, model and production year,
  • number of doors and wheelbase,
  • transmission type,
  • engine version,
  • factory or aftermarket bumper configuration,
  • required lift height.

Avoid using improvised universal spacers or stacking separate lift kits. A correctly selected body lift should be a complete, vehicle-specific system.
